Amal Clooney to Iraq: Allow U.N. probe of Islamic State Yazidi crimes

Comment:Across the world, there are probably thousands of people like Ms. Clooney who help to make the world a better place but are known only by those who have professional or experiential connections, specialized knowledge or a lay interests in their fields. Clearly, more people learned about Ms. Clooney’s work after she married a celebrity. But have we just all forgotten what the US did in Iraq and Afghanistan and other countries? Who armed ISIS in the first place? When George W, gets investigated for war crimes, I’ll believe her with all my heart. US “activists”  want justice for the world, but not against their own people of course.

“We do want to see an investigation take place with the cooperation of the Iraqi authorities,” says international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney after speaking at a United Nations event on accountability for crimes committed by Islamic State.

International human rights lawyer Amal Clooney and a young Yazidi woman who was enslaved and raped by Islamic State fighters pushed Iraq on Thursday, 9th of March to allow a United Nations investigation into crimes by the militant group.

Islamic State is committing genocide against the Yazidis in Syria and Iraq to destroy the minority religious community through killings, sexual slavery and other crimes, U.N. experts reported in June last year.

Clooney, who represents Nadia Murad and other Yazidi victims of Islamic State, said that despite public support by Iraq for a U.N. investigation, the government has not yet made a request.

Murad was abducted and held by Islamic State fighters for three months in 2014 in Mosul. She told her story to the U.N. Security Council in December 2015 and since then has been campaigning for justice.

Reuters reported earlier today that Iraqi forces have retaken around 30 percent of west Mosul from Islamic State militants, a commander of the elite Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) said on Sunday, as soldiers pushed further into the jihadists’ territory.

Yemen: The Civil War and the role of Saudi Arabia has driven Yemen to the brink of famine

The conflict is the primary driver of a hunger crisis that the UN has warned could turn to famine this year if nothing is done.

Yemen has been divided by nearly two years of civil war that pits the Iran-allied Houthi group against a Western-backed Sunni Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia that is carrying out air strikes. At least 10,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

Two years since the conflict escalated in Yemen, more than 17 million Yemenis do not know if they will be able to put food on the table to feed their families, the Norwegian Refugee Council warned this week at the start of a donor conference for Yemen.
